In today's nature reserve, flat grassland areas were created on predominantly impermeable subsoil by gravel and extensive filling with industrial waste. After heavy rainfall and flooding of the Rhine, extensive still waters form there, which are suitable as a habitat and resting place for waders and water birds. During the breeding season, the area is particularly important during wet years.
