The Face of Nijmegen (Roman Mask)

Look out over Nijmegen through the eyes of a real Roman. That is possible here with this enormous work of art of a Roman mask, made by Andreas Hetfeld. Both the mask itself and the view of the city are definitely worth a stop!

At the beginning of the 20th century, the original splendid specimen of the mask was unearthed from the Waal when dredging. The right cheek of this mask is slightly scratched. It has been suggested that it reads Marcian. See for yourself what it says? The original mask can be seen as a masterpiece of the permanent collection of the Valkhof.

A huge statue of a Roman mask, made by artist Andreas Hetfeld, has recently been placed on the city island of Veur-Lent. Through the eyes of the mask one can cast a Roman view on Nijmegen (Noviomagus). Roman soldiers would have worn such masks during battles, parades, ceremonies and tournaments.
