The fountain was built in 1898 for the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph by Max Kropf.

The Pied Piper Fountain was created in 1898 and placed in front of the town hall. It is reminiscent of the legend that a so-called rat catcher freed the city from a plague of rats by luring the rats into the Danube by playing his flute. However, the mayor did not want to pay the agreed price. So the Pied Piper returned a few days later wearing splendid clothes and carrying a golden flute. The children of the city followed their sounds onto a ship that sailed away with the children, never to be seen again.
