From before 1150 to 1848, the Latin School of Deventer was a school where boys were prepared for a religious office or study at a university. It was a so-called Latin school, a type of school that was widespread in Europe for centuries. The school originally belonged as a chapter school to the Lebuinuskerk, the main church of the Oversticht. Boys were trained for services in the church or chapter. Partly because Deventer, as a Hanseatic city, was an important hub for international trade, the school grew in reach and significance.
