The Zollamtsteg, a pedestrian bridge, leads over the bridge of the U4 (formerly the city railway), which runs one above the other over the regulated Wien River.

      ________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Zollamtsteg and the Zollamtsbrücke of the subway, which is diagonally below it, connect the 1st (Schallautzerstrasse) and the 3rd (Vordere Zollamtsstrasse) districts over the Wien River, directly behind the former Austro-Hungarian War Ministry, built between 1909 and 1913 and now the government building.

A new footbridge was built on the site of an older wooden footbridge (originally again as a wooden structure), which was opened in 1868 and named after the neighboring main customs office. In the course of regulating the Wien River and building the city railway in 1899/1900, a steel footbridge was constructed by Martin Paul. The architectural design was by Josef Hackhofer and Friedrich Ohmann. Anton Biró was responsible for the steel construction work.

The footbridge originally had a dense, level walkway construction using a Zores iron construction. This was later replaced by wooden planks with one centimeter wide joints. This walkway construction was complex to maintain and not user-friendly. A new walkway construction was built in 2008 based on the original condition.
