Discovered in the early twentieth century, only a third of the original building is visible today, with part of the arena and the cavea, while the remaining portion is hidden below the square and the buildings facing it. The Roman structure, dating back to the Augustan age (I-II AD), had an elliptical plan and measured a total of about 102 x 82 m, hosting between 12,000 and 14,000 people. The building was partly built up and partly excavated using the Lecce stone foundation as a support for the steps.
