The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century as the imperial fief of Wolfram von Löwenstein. In 1283 it was bestowed on Johann Ochsenstein by the Roman-German King Rudolf von Habsburg.

In 1380 the castle was shared with Hensel Streif von Landenberg and in 1383 half of it was pledged to Johannes (Hanemann) I von Bitsch.

Just three years later, in 1386, the castle was destroyed by Imperial Vicar Johann von Lichtenberg because of robber barons. It probably wasn't rebuilt.

The ruin was later owned by the Puller von Hohenburg (1482), the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch (1485), the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg (1570) and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt (1736).

What was left was destroyed in 1676/1677 by French troops under General Monclar.
