The first pile was driven by Puck van Heel on September 16, 1935. After that, 578 piles 21 meters deep were driven into the ground. The construction of the stadium was completed in 1936, but because the infrastructure around the stadium promised by the municipality had not yet been built, the stadium was unusable for months and the opening took place in March 1937. Stadium Feijenoord had a capacity of 65,000, including many standing places. At the championship match of SVV against Heerenveen in 1949, a record number of 69,300 spectators would have been present. After several renovations, the capacity has been reduced to 51,117 spectators. For security reasons, even fewer people are now allowed into the stadium, which means that matches are sold out when 47,500 spectators are present.

Feijenoord Stadium, popularly known as De Kuip, is a football stadium in South Rotterdam (IJsselmonde). It is a stadium with football history where the professional football club Feyenoord plays its home games. The driving force behind the construction of this stadium was Feyenoord chairman Leen van Zandvliet, after whom the adjacent square is also named. The stadium was designed by the architect Leendert van der Vlugt, from the architectural firm Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. Construction started in 1935; the opening was on March 27, 1937. Van der Vlugt died in 1936 and therefore did not attend the opening.

The name of the stadium is spelled in different ways. The owner of the stadium is known as 'Stadion Feijenoord N.V.' (with ij) registered in the trade register of the Chamber of Commerce. This game mode is also used on the stadium's website. On the other hand, a y is used in the Rotterdam City Archives, on letterhead and above the entrance on the Olympia side (see photo opposite): Stadion Feyenoord.
