Impressive museum in the center of town to preserve and display the history of Fort Bragg and the Mendocino Coast. The historical society’s headquarters is located in the Guest house Museum. The Guest House was built primarily of coast redwood in 1892 by the Fort Bragg Redwood Company as a private residence for the Johnson Family owners of the company. The house was also used for visiting senior officials from the San Francisco headquarters and VIP guest visitors to the Fort Bragg mill and logging sites.

The guesthouse was built in 1892 by the Fort Bragg Redwood Company as a private residence for the Johnson family, who owned the company. It served as a showcase for Union Lumber wood products and was constructed from the finest old growth redwood and contained 67,000 board feet of lumber. Of note are the ornate woodwork, decorative moldings, door and window casings, and the staircase's coil and spindle railings, along with the stained glass windows above the first landing.Today the Guest House Museum serves as the headquarters of the Fort Bragg - Mendocino Coast Historical Society. The public is encouraged to explore this architectural wonder and discover the history of the city and the lumber industry along the Mendocino coast. The Fort Bragg California Historical Landmark is in front of the house. Fort Bragg (the Fort) was founded in 1857 before the American Civil War as a military garrison rather than a fortress. It was named after Army officer Braxton Bragg, who served the United States in the Mexican-American War. The city was founded in 1889.
