There are only two planetariums in the whole of Thuringia. One of them is on the beautiful Burgsee in Bad Salzungen. It was built because 42 years ago there was a projector left in the Suhl observatory. At that time, astronomy teachers from the Altkreis Bad Salzungen were regularly on further training courses at the Suhl observatory and when the Suhl observatory received a new projector, the old device, "ZKP 1", was ready to be passed on, the Bad Salzungen astro teachers sat down for a planetarium in Bad Salzungen. With the option of building this in the shortest possible time, the Bad Salzungen district was awarded the contract for the projector.

After several years, in which the location and the financing had to be clarified, the school center (station for young technicians and natural scientists) was awarded the contract. In 1983 the construction of the planetarium could begin.

The heart of the planetarium, the projector, dates back to 1952 and was partly handcrafted at the time
VEB Carl-Zeiss Jena manufactured. It was the very first of its kind. Today only three more exist in the world.

The precision and image accuracy of the projector are still admirable today.

The artificial starry sky is represented on the dome with a diameter of eight meters and a height of 6.5 meters.

At last it was time! The first public event took place on October 4, 1984. All employees of the student center at the time helped to make the planetarium known. Specially prepared lectures were also jointly initiated. The first space fairy tale - "Schnuppi's Journey into Space" - was very well received by all visitors.
