The old mill of Betekom is a monument with a special appearance. As one of the oldest mills in the Benelux and the only windmill in the world built in Diestian iron sandstone, the mill has a rich history. Built in the 16th century, the mill served as a grain mill until the beginning of the 20th century. During the First World War, the mill was set on fire and has remained a ruin ever since. In 1993, the mill was protected as a monument and village view. After more than 100 years of decay, the restoration of the mill body was started in the autumn of 2021 thanks to the efforts of the Molenwerkgroep and Natuurpunt Begijnendijk. In the spring of 2022, a staircase, a viewing platform and a roof were added, allowing visitors to experience the impressive view from the 10-metre-high body, as well as a look at the inside of the mill.
