Then, with a social project, the fingerprint of a thumb was modelled into the landscape.
Since 2008, the Fuhrenkamp-Schutzverein from Ganderkesee has kept the sandpit free of woody growth, which is called de-shrubbing. This preserves an important habitat for insects. More information can be found at fuhrenkamp-schutzverein.de

A disused sand pit in the district of Rethorn has been transformed into a giant walkable human thumbprint in the landscape. Paths and wall structures trace the lines of an oversized thumb.
Today it is regularly maintained by the Ganderkesee Fuhrenkamp Protection Association.
