During the Second World War, a "sham mine" was built in the Haard. This served the purpose of deceiving the Allied bomber formations so that they unloaded their bomb loads in the forest instead of over the local mine or the Buna works in Marl at the time.
    So they became wooden dummies
erected, searchlights and mirrors set up and oil barrels lit so that there was a nice and bright glow and smoke while the actual mine was darkened. Wehrmacht soldiers who maintained the "mine operation" could retreat to a nearby bunker.

Of course, nothing can be seen of the actual system anymore, and I don't know of any photos from that time either. Overall, the information is rather poor. The only thing that has survived is the small bunker. A few bomb craters can still be seen in the area.
Later, a pirate radio station was set up there for a short time. The bunker is now walled up and barred, bats have found a home there, the lock is broken open again and again.
