The whole legend is wonderfully written and worth reading at:

By digging its bed, the Amblève eroded the fragile slate, leaving the white-veined quartzite blocks unchanged. The river now flows between voluminous quartzite blocks with rounded shapes.

The Fonds de Quarreux is a picturesque stretch of the Amblève Valley, where the river winds its way between giant quartzite boulders (hard rock formations). The flow of water between and over the stones creates an impressive and soothing spectacle, especially at high tide.

The most famous legend of the Fonds de Quarreux tells the tragic story of Quarreux and his wife, Marie:

Long ago, in the valley lived a poor but happy miller, Quarreux, with his wife, Marie.
One day, Marie fell seriously ill. Desperate, Quarreux called upon the devil, who promised to cure his wife—but in return, demanded his soul.
Quarreux, distraught with grief, agreed. The devil helped him, but when the time came to retrieve his soul, Quarreux tried to escape.
He ran to his mill on the Amblève River, where the devil pursued him. When Quarreux prayed to God to forgive him, the earth burst open, destroying the mill.
The stones from the mill are said to have fallen into the river, and there they remain: the Fonds de Quarreux.
