January 24: commemoration of Vaudois independence
The date of January 24th corresponds to the day during which, in 1798, occurred the events which brought its independence to the Pays de Vaud, then subject of the Bernese.
In December 1797 the Directory placed the Pays de Vaud under the protection of France. On January 23, 1798, General Ménard invited the Vaudois to liberation. With this support, an assembly of city delegates, meeting in Lausanne with the first idea of entering into discussion with the Bernese, took the step of independence. The bailiffs were fired.
