The name "Holy Rock" is derived from the location of this rock group: because the forest that surrounds the rock has always belonged to the Kottingwörth Church Foundation.

The Heimatverein Paulushofen has compiled what the local history has to say about the rock group

In earlier times the church patron was simply called "Heiling" in the vernacular and accordingly one also spoke of the fields and forests that were owned by the churches, of the "Heilingfeldern" and of the "Heilingholz". The rock formation lies in the "Heilingholz" and was therefore called "Heilingfelsen". When translated into written German, the “Heilingfelsen” became the “Holy Rock”.

During the years of the Second World War, boys from Kottingwörth set up a simple wooden cross on the rocks, as the place was still very well visible from the valley at that time. Around 1977 the Catholic rural youth from Paulushofen, with the support of the pastor Josef Bierschneider and the city of Beilngries, renewed the cross, built a footbridge, installed fall protection and thus created good access for hikers.

From Kottingwörth, the rock above the "Irrloch" (today usually incorrectly called "Hirlloch") is rather difficult to reach. On the mountain, the Paulushofen corridor borders the forest, this area is called “Birklach”, and from there the former lookout point is relatively easy to access.

The vantage point on the Holy Rock is a bit off the hiking trails. But you should take the time to take a look at the Altmühltal.
