After construction began in 1870, the 233 meter long steel truss bridge was inaugurated on August 10, 1872 for the Ruhr Valley Railway as part of the Bergisch-Märkische railway. With the completion of Lake Baldeney in 1933, the water level was raised so much that not only the second field between the pillars from the Heisinger side, as before, but all five fields were completely undermined by water. In 1945 the bridge was blown up by the German Wehrmacht to stop the advancing American troops. After the Second World War, the Christine trade union rebuilt it on a single track. The railway bridge became superfluous with the closure of the surrounding coal mines and was taken out of service on October 1, 1978.

The old railway bridge leads Läufer across the lake between Heisingen and Kupferdreh. The railway line used to be an extension of the railway line in Essen-Hügel.
