A border town between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy, Col di Lana was the scene of fierce fighting during the First World War.
The peak was repeatedly contested, until on 17 April 1916 the Italian troops, after detonating a 5-ton mine, assaulted the summit.
The Austrians withdrew from their positions on Col di Lana and the new focal point of hostilities became nearby Monte Síef.
Today, the enormous crater left by the mine still stands as a reminder of those brutal clashes, while a small church was erected in memory of those who fell in the conflict.
