The 'big' Alimini was generated by the erosion of the sea and extends for about 2.5 km in length with a depth of about 4 meters. The basin is surrounded by thick pine forests and the Mediterranean scrub which is home for migratory species such as the white stork, the flamingo, the crane and other water birds such as the mallard, the moorhen, the black-winged stilt, as well as some species of birds of prey. The big lake connects on the eastern side to the sea and on the southern side to the small lake through a narrow channel.
