A work of art of great importance and with around 800 years of history is the early Gothic church of Maria Magdalene. About the beautiful over 100 years old Kirchsteig Bridge, it is reached after about 100 meters from the hiking trail. Next to her you can still find the burial place of the Stecknitz drivers from times long past. It is worth visiting the church with its medieval murals, the 14th-century tree-cross and the 15th-century Maria Magdalene statue. The baptismal font from 1734 is also an art historical gem. During the summer months the church is open daily from 9am to 4pm. Guided tours for groups are available on request (Tel 04544/344, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 12pm). Services are held every Sunday and public holiday at 9.30am.

From the point of view of settlement-historical research, the church was already present in 1230. Since its restoration in 1899, it has been showing a particularly richly painted church with its partly rediscovered medieval wall paintings. Worth seeing are the Acanthus Baroque altar, the pulpit, the baptismal font, the statue of Mary Magdalene and the western gallery. Today, with the Stecknitz driver burial ground, the pastorate, the Kirchsteig bridge, the canal and the lock, the church is a unique ensemble in the region. In 2008, it was remembered that in the Middle Ages, the church was named after Maria-Magdalena, the patron saint of Stecknitzfahrer, and has been reintroducing this name ever since.

One of my favorite churches. The baptismal angel is beautiful.
