The Ulenboom is so well-known because it shouldn't actually be standing anymore. It is considered one of the most resilient natural monuments in the district of Gifhorn. Decades ago, children playing set fire to rubbish inside the hollow tree. The tree was ablaze from the inside out. Because the vital conductive pathways of a linden tree lie directly under the bark, the tree survived the fire. It bravely held on over the years, even though the supporting heartwood was missing.
