The gravel pit of the Kieswerke Ohle & Lau GmbH is known as a spectacular location for fossils and debris.
Since the beginning of commercial clay mining in Groß Pampau in the 1980s and 1990s, remains of fossil whales and other marine animals from around 11 million years ago have repeatedly appeared. They sank to the seabed of the original North Sea and were, like in a "time capsule", embedded in deposited layers of so-called mica clay. Today they can be salvaged, prepared and exhibited.
