The Alouette quarry is located in Calestienne, 1.5 km south of Hotton. The site is in fact made up of two old contiguous abandoned quarries, one of Couvinian sandstone and the other of Givetian limestone. The contact zone of these two geological stages combined with a remarkable diversity of rocks explains the presence of vegetation and flora of great interest, including a population very rich in orchids. The local fauna has still only been very partially inventoried, but preliminary results suggest a particularly high diversity potential, particularly with regard to butterflies which are represented by at least 32 species. The site has been established as a state nature reserve since 2012 over an area of approximately 6 hectares.
