Wooden Sculptures in De Oude Spoorwegberm

You walk for more than 3 to 5 km on a path through the unique nature reserve the Oude railway verge. It is one of the narrowest nature reserves in Flanders.

On this route you walk through the longest and narrowest nature reserve in Belgium.
The nature reserve horizontally cuts through the natural undulations in the landscape. This results in a series of different types of landscapes, ranging from very dry to very humid.
History: You must already know it, because there is no longer any evidence that trains ran here from the early 20th century until 1969. The line that was located here is the disappeared line 25A, a branch of the railway line 25 that runs from Brussels to Antwerp. Line 25A branched off from line 25 at Sint Katelijne Waver. Then she walked across the Nete, sideways from Duffel, further to Waarloos and Kontich. In Kontich the line had several branches, including towards Boom and back to line 25 in Kontich-Kazernen and to Mortsel Oude-God via the Edegemse Boniverlei. It continued via Edegem, Wilrijk and Hoboken to Antwerp, where the line served the port and also connected to the fort line (52/1) that served the fort belt south of Antwerp. The railway line 25A was taken out of service in the late 1960s and finally broken up in 1970. From the Nete to just before Kontich, this railway line has become a nature reserve "De Oude Spoorwegberm". Near Edegem and Wilrijk, the former railway now runs the E19 motorway.

The Old Railway Verge is located in Kontich, Duffel and Rumst. The area includes part of the former railway line 25A.
The old railway embankment is the longest and narrowest nature reserve in Belgium.
You can visit this area via the walking junctions or, if you prefer to cycle, via the cycle tour "Along 7 watercourses" (35 or 45 km).
