The Lake Boissow Nature Reserve and the southern part of Lake Neuenkirchen are located in the northwest of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in the middle of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve.

The nature reserve is part of the Schaalsee European Bird Sanctuary, designated in 1992. It covers approximately 86 hectares and includes parts of the town of Zarrentin am Schaalsee in the districts of Boissow, Techin, Neuhof, and Neuenkirchen.

The nature reserve serves to protect and preserve a narrow, partly boggy erosion valley along Lake Boissow and Lake Neuenkirchen, which are connected by an approximately 250-meter-long stream, and the associated reed belts, hillside forests, spring-fed marsh forests, and the moor and mineral soil areas used as green forest.

Nutrient inputs from neighboring agricultural land and fishing activities cause disruption.

A hiking trail along the eastern shore and an observation tower provide insights into the area.
