Originally there were seven crosses, of which only three have survived. They were attached at certain intervals from the parish of Gefell (near Kelberg) to the Hilgerath church along the forest path. Gefell used to belong to the parish of Hilgerath. If someone died in Gefell, the dead person was brought to the Hilgerath churchyard via this path. At the crosses, the mourners stopped to pray.
