The current wooden bridge was only inaugurated in 1991. Its predecessor fell victim to an arson attack on April 5, 1989. The arsonists were never caught, but they were attributed to the Jura separatists. Büren's landmark has had supra-regional significance for centuries. The 108-meter-long Aare crossing has connected the town with the district of Reiben (belonged to Büren since 1911) since 1275.

During the internment of the French Bourbaki army in 1871 (Franco-Prussian War), it even served as a stable. At that time, over 100 horses and mules were crammed together.
