San Paolo in Alpe is a small, completely uninhabited mountain town, located in a high altitude prairie (1000 meters above sea level). What remains of the settlement are the ruined church, the tiny cemetery and a long, low farmhouse.
During World War II, S. Paolo had considerable strategic importance, having been chosen by the allies as a drop zone for ammunition and food for the partisans. On 12 April 1944 the church was set on fire by German troops. The National Park has included this place within the 'Path of Freedom' (places linked to the history of the Resistance within the Park).
