In the 9th and 10th centuries, the eastern horsemen of the Hungarians threatened southern and southwestern Germany. The cavalry warriors were feared archers who could fire their weapon at full gallop but avoided foot combat whenever possible. In response to the threat, numerous, sometimes huge, ramparts were built as troop bases and refuge castles for the population.
