Best Hiking Routes to Trachoulas Gorge

Tips

  • The gorge is only a few hundred meters long, but still quite impressive. Goats often watch you hike. The entrance to the gorge is above the port of Agios Faulos. There is a small parking lot at the saddle, which is on a gravel road.

At first it's relatively steep downhill - but most of the way is secured with a railing. The gorge itself can be walked through without major obstacles. The path is marked with red dots and bars.

  • To reach Dragon Bay you have to go to Lendas - located on the Libyan Sea. To do this you have to cross the Asterousia Mountains - 500 meters up and then back down again - endless switchbacks.
Once you arrive in Lendas you have to drive/walk a few kilometers on a gravel road to the entrance to the Trachoulas Gorge. Then comes the descent through the gorge, 100 meters in altitude - not really complicated, but slippery because of the rubble. You have to be willing and able to do that. But one thing is also clear: it rarely gets busy here!

  • There is a tiny parking lot above the gorge - get there early! The descent is short, with two small climbing sections, otherwise easy.
