Even if the parish church of Erkelenz, consecrated to Saint Lambertus, has only existed in its current form since the reconstruction in 1954, the origins of the church in the heart of Erkelenz are many centuries old. During the clearing of rubble as a result of the destruction of the choir and nave by bombing during the Second World War, foundations from different epochs were found, which suggest predecessor buildings in the Franconian style with Romanesque extension from the 11th century and the Gothic nave from 1418. The roof burned down in the great city fire in 1540, but apart from that it existed for over 500 years until the end of the war.

When the city was conquered and partially destroyed in 1371, the nave of the Romanesque church was probably also damaged, so that a new Gothic building took its place while retaining the Romanesque tower, which was consecrated in 1418 and expanded again in 1482 with a chancel became. Although the roof burned down in the great city fire of 1540, this nave was to last more than 500 years until the end of the Second World War.
