The Aveiro Lagoon is a huge inland estuary of several rivers, separated from the Atlantic by a wide mostly sandy spit that has formed over thousands of years. There are a few opportunities to get to the beach, but on often sandy soft trails. Therefore the coastal bike route parallels the lagoon, in several sections running on or next to the highway. Excellent views of the wetlands and birdlife the whole way.
