The fortified town of Klundert formed part of the southern line of defense against the Spaniards in the Eighty Years' War. The Klundert fortresses have been transformed into a green area, where you can walk around the remains of the canals in peace. Klundert's pride and joy is the renaissance town hall, built by Prince Maurits in 1621.

The fortified town of Klundert was strategically located during the Eighty Years' War: right on the border between Holland and Brabant. William of Orange saw that too. That is why he surrounded the town in 1583 with the Fortifications of Klundert: bastions, an earthen wall and a moat. The fortified town of Klundert was thus part of the Defence Line of the Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak. Ultimately, the fortified town was spared: the Spanish never besieged it. Later, in 1793, Klundert was a difficult obstacle for the advancing French troops.
