In 1675 Hemden received the so-called Kreuzkapelle, which served the Dutch Catholics from Aalten and Bredevoort, who were prevented from practicing their faith, and in 1751 counted 27 German and 451 Dutch Catholics as an auxiliary parish. With the freedom of religion in Holland, the Kreuzkapelle lost its importance at the end of the 18th century. The parish was moved to Barlo in 1823, the chapel was demolished and z. Partly used for the rebuilding of the St. Helena Church in Barlo. A cross reminds of the former location. In 1939, Hemden received the St. Helena Chapel, which was relocated from Bocholt forest recreation to Alte Aaltener Straße, as a place of worship, which has been looked after by the Bocholt Capuchins ever since.
