From 1316 onwards the parish church for Neef was the Matthias church down in the village. As its name suggests, it was dedicated to St. Matthias. It was also the house church for the Neef nobility, who previously owned their own small chapel in the nearby castle house. The Matthias Church has not been used clerically since 1890. The entire property came into private hands. The nave was torn down. Only the tower is reminiscent of history. Finally, in 1891, today's church was consecrated. It also bears the patronage of St. Matthias with the title "Exaltation of the Cross".
