The Battle of Sankelmarker See was a skirmish in the German-Danish War in 1864. Here, Prussia and the Danish king fought for the affiliation of the Duchy of Schleswig, which was under Danish rule. After the Danes had to give up their positions in the south, the Danish troops withdrew here. Austrian troops, allied with Prussia, followed them and a battle ensued in which 403 Austrian soldiers and 944 Danish soldiers died.
