The origins of our church go back to 969. Even before 969, Count Heinrich I began building the first church on the site where our church stands today. Delayed by a Norman invasion, it was inaugurated in 1001 in honor of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the apostle Bartholomew. The monastery and church were cremated in two fires in the 13th century. The first stone church was built in the same place around 1250.
In the middle of the 14th century, this church was expanded into a three-aisled hall church. In 1545/46 the robber baron Joachim Pentz plundered the monastery and church. Much was destroyed or stolen.
