According to tradition, at the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Pankratius, to whom this Emsdetten church is consecrated, was publicly executed for his Christian faith. The body of the martyr was buried on the Roman Via Aurelia - in the catacombs later named after him - under today's church "San Pancrazio". His feast day is on May 12th, he is one of the three so-called "ice saints" in popular piety, together with Servatius and Bonifatius (in some areas supplemented by "Cold Sophie" one day later).

The parish church of St. Pankratius is the center of the city and at the same time the oldest church in Emsdetten. The first wooden church in Emsdetten was built on this site around 850, which was then replaced by a Romanesque stone church around 1170. After a double lightning strike in the tower and church in 1840, the church was closed. After being rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style, it was inaugurated in 1848 with what is now the three-aisled church interior. The church tower was built in 1906. Particularly noteworthy are the Josefs altar and the Marien altar.
