Waverley abbey was the first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order. A small group of French monks settled in this beautiful spot in 1128 and Waverley became the springboard for Cistercian settlement in southern England.
There is no entrance fee to visit the abbey and you can walk amongst the ruins at will. A café has recently popped up in nearby Waverley Abbey House and is open Fri-Sun from 10:00-17:00 until 29 August.

This is a wonderful spot to spend some time. Very peaceful and perfect for a picnic especially on one of the benches by the river in the grounds of the house
