In the gypsum areas between Düna, Ührde and Lichtenstein, important finds and findings have been made for ice age and palaeontological research as well as the history of science. This began in 1750 with the discovery and scientific description of three skeletons of the woolly rhinoceros in Hainholz near Düna, and continued - as a climax - with the definition of the species Mammuthus primigenius (mammoth) in 1808 by Blumenbach, University of Göttingen, based on a road construction work between Ührde and of the molar tooth found in B 241 as well as an abundance of large mammal finds during gypsum mining in the Lichtenstein quarry (today Südharzer Gipswerk). All of these finds and events - with the exception of some in the Osteroder Museum and in older articles in the Osteroder Heimatbl Blätter - have not yet been given permanent appreciation for the local public. You should always be reminded again, for example by the mammoth stone, which is located directly on the popular karst hiking trail.
