József Mindszenty [jo:ʒɛf mindsɛnti] (29 March 1892 – 6 May 1975) was the Prince Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom, cardinal, and leader of the Catholic Church in Hungary from 2 October 1945 to 18 December 1973. The statue is a popular hiking highlight in the Komárom-Esztergom region and is part of several hikes, including easy circular routes from Esztergom to the Basilica and the Millennium Monument. Mindszenty, who served as Archbishop of Esztergom from 1945 to 1973, is considered a central figure of the Catholic Church in Central Europe during the communist era and, according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, embodied an uncompromising opposition to fascism and communism.
