From the ruins of the old stock spinning mill, which was built around 1858, the new university library of the TU Chemnitz was built over many years. It was opened on October 1st, 2020, but can only be used to a limited extent due to the corona pandemic.

The building was used as a spinning mill until around 1905 and then became the property of the city. Rented to various entrepreneurs, resulting in various interior renovations. The upper floors were destroyed in the last war. The building was used as a warehouse, food distribution, temporary opera house and commercial kitchen. The city library was built here from 1950. A department store and the puppet theater also moved in. Later the Neue Sächsische Galerie. From the turn of the millennium onwards there was hardly any use, which is why demolition was considered despite it being a listed building. The renovation began in 2014.
