    After the cormorant colony near Wochowsee was abandoned in 2012, the animals now feel particularly at home on the Kleiner Werl, the so-called Cormorant Island in Scharmützelsee. 350 breeding pairs were recently observed here, and 19 on the nearby Grosser Werl. Sea eagles value cormorants as an enrichment of their diet. The natural, almost 2800 square meter island property is home to one of the largest cormorant colonies in Brandenburg. In the summer of 2019, the Nature Conservation Association (NABU) Brandenburg bought the island at auction in order to secure it for permanent nature conservation.
