The “Petrified Lake” Börtewitz, discovered by Freiberg geologist Harald Walter in 1988, is a spectacular window into the history of the earth. About 290 million years ago, the lake was buried several times over a period of about 4,000 years by the ash deposits from volcanic eruptions and its living world was preserved. Numerous plant remains with conifers and ferns as well as animal fossils with amphibians, fish and arthropods have been preserved.

The lake is one of the most important sites in Europe. Fossil material from Börtewitz is now used for international comparison when assessing genera and species.

The spectacular finds include several well-preserved skull and fin spines of the “freshwater shark” Bohemiacanthus. With skull lengths of 10 cm, body lengths of 60 to 70 cm are assumed in a complete animal (Walter 2010).
