Today's Westerholt is characterized in its historic town center by Westerholt Castle with the adjoining former "Freiheit Westerholt", consisting of around 60 well-preserved half-timbered houses ("Old Village"). In addition, the townscape is largely determined by the arrival of mining in 1907.
