The fortress Gordona from World War I was one of the most important in the Val d'Intelvi and part of Italy's northern defense bar against Switzerland. It was supposed to protect Italy, especially the Po Valley, from a possible attack from the north. The fortress was completed between 1916 and 1917, construction began in 1904. Today, some parts of the complex and trenches are still well preserved.
