Around 1234, the Graukloster was built on the foundations of the former Danish royal court. Duke Abel, later king of Denmark, left the grounds of the former Danish royal court to the Franciscan order. The actual name of the monastery was St. Paul's Monastery or St. Paul's Monastery. The term "gray monastery" derives from the gray robes of the Franciscan monks.
