The DBU natural heritage area Goitzsche is around 1018 hectares in size and is located south-east of Bitterfeld in the former opencast mining area.

Even today, the landscape on the DBU natural heritage area Goitzsche is shaped by the former opencast mining activities.

A varied landscape with a large number of habitats and a large variety of species has developed on the once barren open-cast mining area.

Forest, open land, wetlands and bodies of water alternate on a small scale.

As a result of reforestation, sparse, young forests now cover a large part of the heaped-up heaps.

The remaining holes of the opencast mine are filled with ground and surface water and the open water areas as well as the diverse shore areas are a prerequisite for the development of the great biodiversity.

For example, the osprey (Pandion haliaetus) has settled on the DBU natural heritage site.

Nesting aids were installed on former power poles in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn.

Other remnants of mining are raw soil areas on which specialized pioneer species settle, such as the blue-winged grasshopper (Oedipoda caerulescens).

The few remaining open areas of vegetation, such as in the area of the former Holzweißig field airfield, are protected from overgrowth with trees and shrubs by regular mowing.

Parts of the landscape on the DBU natural heritage area Goitzsche are subject to dynamic change, as the rain models deep erosion channels in the raw soil.

Together with the neighboring "wilderness area" of the BUND, the DBU natural heritage area forms a 2,500-hectare area that is secured for nature conservation.
