The old paper mill at this point burned down in 1856 and was not rebuilt. Around 1880 a sawmill was built in the same place.

North of Hollenstedt lies hidden in the forest Appelbeck am See. At the beginning of the 17th century, the brook Appelbecke was dammed to form a pond in order to operate a paper mill at the weir. For more than 200 years, rags were made into handmade paper there. In place of the paper mill that was destroyed by fire, a sawmill was later built, and next to it a farm - the nucleus for the Appelbeck farm on the lake.
