The municipality of Selvino has around 2050 inhabitants, is located at an altitude of around 1,000 m above sea level and has a single hamlet, Foppa.

It is located in an open position, above an undulating plateau of the pre-Alpine mountain ridge that separates the Seriana Valley from the Serina Valley, a side of the wider Brembana Valley.

The origin of the name, according to the most reliable hypothesis supported by Bortolo Belotti in 955, should be found in the Latin SILVA: "forest", "scrub", "vegetation".
The mutation from the I of silva to the A of Salvino is confirmed in two Milanese toponyms collected by Boselli: SALVARAIA (from silva) and SALVANESCO (from silvano).

The most reliable etymology therefore derives from the late Latin "selvina" meaning small forest.

      SCIESOPOLI

The history of this structure begins on 11 June 1933, when the Milanese fascist group which takes its name from the Risorgimento patriot Amatore Sciesa, founded a farmhouse in Selvino.

It was the most beautiful colony in Europe, according to fascist propaganda.

But on 21 September 1945 the Sciesopoli colony was officially entrusted to the Allied Government, following the interest of Ferruccio Parri and the Mayor of Milan Antonio Greppi, to the Milanese Jewish community and from it to the Jewish Brigade.

The colony was transformed into a welcoming and functional structure for hundreds of Jewish children, many orphans, survivors of ghettos and concentration camps or who lived on the streets and hidden in the forests.

On 27 October 2019 the Municipality of Selvino inaugurated the MuMeSE, the Jewish Sciesopoli Memorial Museum - Casa dei Bambini di Selvino, in memory of the children who survived the war and the Shoah.

For more information on MuMeSE and opening days, see the website of the Municipality of Selvino.
